The Car Behind Me

I sat down to write today with no idea in hand. And for some reason, my mind went back to something that happened on the highway a few days ago.

I was driving my son to the airport, moving fast in the fast lane. Somewhere behind me, a car appeared. Accelerating, closing the gap, unrelenting.

I resisted. I sped up and held my lane for a couple of kilometers. Some mix of pride and stubbornness, I suppose. Why should I move?

But the car kept coming. No hesitation, no wavering. At some point, I put on my indicator and gave way. The car screamed past and disappeared ahead.

Thinking about it now, I understand why that moment popped up in my mind.

I moved because the driver behind me knew exactly where he wanted to go. There was no doubt in how he drove. And in the face of that certainty, stepping aside felt like the natural and safe thing to do.

That is how clarity works in life too. When you know exactly where you want to go, the world responds. Some people help you get there. Others simply get out of the way. Both are useful.

The road opens to those who are certain.
