Balance Between “Analysis-Paralysis” and “Extinct By Instinct”

Extinct by instinct

When it comes to decision-making, there are two extremes we need to be careful to avoid.

First, there’s “analysis-paralysis,” where you get stuck in excessive analysis of information in the hope of discovering the right choice to make. A typical example is- You spend too much time collecting data and analyzing root causes and delay resolving the problem.

On the flip side, there’s “extinct by instinct,” where you make decisions impulsively with very little analysis. For example, you recruit someone you are meeting for the first time based on a gut feeling without doing any validations.

We all need to figure out a balance between the two extremes of rational and emotional, where we think through all the key aspects before deciding. We need the right amount of analysis to ensure no fatal errors. Effective decision-making lies in navigating between these two extremes and finding a balance that feels appropriate for the situation.
