Proof That You Can Do Hard Things
September 17, 2026
We build our sense of who we are from evidence. Not from what we tell ourselves, but from what we have actually done.
And the most useful evidence of all is proof that you can do hard things.
I think about the times I have written a blog post late at night, drained, with nothing left, and done it anyway. The half marathons. The weekends given over to getting something across the line for a client.
Seen in isolation, none of these matter much. But seen together, they quietly mean something substantial.
A private record that says, you have done hard things before, so you can do this one too.
That record changes how you meet the next challenge.
If you have pushed through real difficulty, ordinary difficulties start to feel smaller. A hard conversation, a new role, an unfamiliar skill, a setback, you meet them with more confidence because you have evidence you can cope.
But the opposite is also true.
Avoid hard things long enough, and everything starts to feel hard.
So the hard thing is never only about the thing itself.
Every time you do a hard thing, you add to the record. So that the next time life stretches you, and it will, you already have proof you can meet it.
