Making The “Right” Choice
July 31, 2024
Recently, I’ve been in conversations with a couple of friends wrestling with big life decisions. The common thread? A paralyzing need to pick the “right” option.
I simply ask them, If you’re stressing about the choice, it means both options are good, right? They agree.
So, instead of agonizing over the “right decision,” why not just choose one way and make the “decision right”?
Then they have an inevitable question on the rebound: “What if I choose wrong and things go bad?”
My answer: Even if your choice doesn’t work out and you feel in hindsight that the alternative option would have been better, how would you know if it wouldn’t have been worse, better, or the same?
So, the only advice I gave them: One, don’t waste too much energy in trying to decide. Decide one way and focus on making it work. Two, don’t regret your decisions, even if they don’t pan out.
