Restoring Mindfulness
August 20, 2024
It’s early in the week, and one of my resolutions is to be mindful. Mindfulness isn’t something that just happens; you must focus on it actively. I find a few simple rituals that help me bring mindfulness into my day.
Focus On My breath
The first thing I do as I prepare for work is sit silently for a few minutes. I focus on my breath, observing it without trying to change it. Thoughts may come and go, and my mind may wander. I notice these distractions and gently bring my focus back to my breath.
Observe My Body
Next, I observe my body. I take some time to observe my body. I mentally scan through every part, noticing the flow of energy and the pulse of blood through my veins.
Rework A Routine
This is a little playful. I pick a small routine that I do every day, like drinking my morning cup of hot coffee or wearing my shoes, and I focus on every step in a deliberate way, noticing all the sensory details – sight, sound, texture, and smell.
Actively Listen To Music
I love Indian classical music. I engage, going beyond just passive listening, with a few favorite musical pieces and fully immerse myself in the different aspects of rhythm, melody, and structure.
Mindfulness is an essential aspect of our personal productivity. However, the daily hustle of work can sometimes blunt our mindfulness. Therefore, taking small steps like the ones I describe can lead to significant shifts in restoring a sense of mindfulness and well-being.
