Narratives We Tell Ourselves

Narratives

My behavior in any situation is a direct function of the story I tell myself.

If I tell myself I’m a victim, I’ll act like one. For example, if the story in my head is that someone I care about is ignoring me, I’ll behave in a distant, suspicious way—reinforcing the very narrative that made me feel ignored in the first place.

As a coach, I often remind my coachees: pay attention to the story you’re telling yourself. Positive stories create empowering behaviors. Negative, closed stories create actions that trap you in the very reality you fear.

The real shift happens when you learn to rewrite that inner script. Change the narrative, and your behavior changes with it.

This is true not only for yourself but also for others. If you want to understand someone, uncover the story they tell themselves. And if you want to help them change, you should inspire them with a more compelling story they can believe in.

Because at the end of the day, it’s all about the narratives we carry—and the ones we choose to live by. Change the story, and you change the behavior—and with it, the outcome.
