The Collaboration Conundrum

collaboration

Ever feel like you’re putting in all the effort on a team project, but the results just aren’t clicking? You set clear expectations and provide context, yet deadlines fly by, and deliverables remain elusive. It’s easy to point fingers, but what if the problem lies in the approach, not the people?

Shifting Focus: From Blame to Empathy

My recent coaching sessions reveal a common theme: frustration with colleagues from other departments. Both sides feel justified, convinced they are doing everything right.

But here’s the thing: It’s not about who’s right; it’s about working together.

I can think of a sporting metaphor to illustrate the point.

Imagine a Football Team where a striker’s primary goal is to score goals. However, in the face of an aggressive opposing team, the striker adapts and helps out by going deep into the defense. The same applies to defenders, who go on to attack and score goals if the situation demands. Players respond to the situation, not just their positions.

The Teamwork Analogy

Similarly, colleagues operate within their own departmental realities. When working on collaborative agendas, do they consider the mutual realities or work in silos focused solely on their own needs?

True collaboration is about chemistry and trust. Each member adapts and reacts to the other’s moves, fostering a collaborative flow.

Role of leaders

Leaders must be empathy catalysts and nudge teammates to focus on understanding each other’s situations instead of taking sides. By promoting mutual respect, empathy, and trust, leaders foster collaboration. Regardless of the situation, these values pave the way for a successful team dynamic.

The Takeaway: It’s All About “We” not “Me”

Collaboration isn’t a blame game. It’s a dance where each member understands and responds to the other.
